The final video and story origination will come next week, complete with handmade artwork and animation from my friend and fellow artist Cory Basil [check out the cover photo for a sampling of what’s to come].

Enjoy the download, and come back this evening for a Live performance or this song and many more, right over here

Facebook Fun for a Happy Holiday!
Outside of being a Musician and Songwriter, I’m probably one of the geekiest designers you’ll ever meet.  Usually, this enables me to help other artists promote themselves or make ridiculous video promotions for when my friends and I play music together… but every now and then, I’ll dive into something even goofier.Take my Facebook Holiday Cover, for instance.  What better way to ring in the New Year than with a new timeline… and unofficial uses of image space!
For those of you who are slightly Photoshop savvy, I’ve made a template for you to create your own artwork as well.Download it here:http://bit.ly/FBcoverTemplate
Be safe this week if you’re traveling for the Holiday and come on back in a few days… there’s a lot brewing on the music front for 2012, including a Big Announcement!

Michael's in Jango's Top 15 Holiday Songs

Christmas Music

I’ve been using Jango’s awesome Internet Radio system for a while now, and they’ve done a great job helping independent artists find their audience.

Recently, my Holiday song “Angels We Have Heard On High” made their cut for the official Jango Holiday Radio station… Woot!

But you don’t have to go all the way over there to listen. Download it for FREE here.

… coming up next… video from this past week’s House Shows!

Yep, more music for no moola.  That’s how we like it around here!

I just updated my FREE NoiseTrade Sampler to include 3 free songs.

  1. Leave The Ground

They’re yours, because I like you that much.

I’ve always prided myself on being independent; on never asking for help on something before first trying as hard as I possibly could on my own.  I’ve taken that attitude with me into everything from entrepreneurial ventures to learning instruments and even my personal life.  But even for a seasoned agent of independence, there are moments in life that you find yourself stretched to the limit, burning up as you race yourself to the finish.  You might as well be walking on the face of the sun.

Leave The GroundThe last six months of my life have been some of the most emotionally reviving and physically exhausting that I can recall… but the lessons have been paramount.  Together, you and I knocked out 9 new songs and music videos in under 3 months.  We cracked up together every Friday with Danny Young and I making fools of ourselves singing anything from Katy Perry to random Disney Songs.  And we’ve covered a lot of information, from personal real life issues, to the changing music industry.  While I’m excited to say that this does not mark the end of these events at all, it does mean they may slow down for a while as I refocus my energies.  Why?

Michael’s going out on tour.

Starting in September, I’m looking to book every other weekend out of town.  It’s a small start towards the bigger picture of me being on the road full-time, and it’s already been an exciting ride preparing for it.  With the help of 2 lovely new team members (say hello to Roxanne and Ryan, everyone!) and the strategy of 12South Music behind us, the Shoup bus is about to be on it’s way to a city near you.  And I can’t wait.

Does this mean Song-A-Week is over?

Absolutely not.  Though, it should probably be renamed to “Song-A-Week-or-so” as I may not be churning them out every 7 days.  However, Paul Shearer and I already have a new tune finished and ready to be video-ized for you all!  It’s called “Closer” and I’m really excited for you to hear/see/taste/smell it.

Where will you be playing?

Midwest TourSo glad you asked :).  Initially, I’m booking up around TN, KY, OH, IN, and IL although if you live outside of those areas and feel like I should really come play your town, please get ahold of me via the Contact page and let me know where.  You can also use the nifty little Demand It widget I’ve got on my Shows page.  There are already a number of shows booked for the first week of September through that area, so be sure to check them out.  If you’re in Cleveland or Dayton, Ohio, watch out, because I’m about to crash your city.

Also, if you’d like to see song tuneage in a more intimate setting, think about perhaps hosting a House Show.  I’ll be trying a few of these along the way with club shows, and they can really be a lot of fun.  Check here for more info.

Lastly:

Week of SharingIf you missed the craziness that happened a few weeks back, I gave away 2 complete records of my music for FREE for one week, and did a live broadcast of 24hrs of my life, complete with tutorials, live performances, and utter ridiculousness.

For this weekend only, I’m opening that FREE DOWNLOAD back up.  Click HERE and you can access both of the records for free along with some nifty highlights from the live broadcast.  I’m sure I’ll make a “best of” reel here sometime in the future… after I edit through the 14hrs of footage I have.

Thank you all for always being so supportive and communicative with me, and I look forward to what this next stage has in store for us all!

Paul Shearer and Michael Shoup talk about making the record, and play a previously unreleased song!

For those of you who missed out on Monday, I decided to broadcast 14hrs of my life LIVE on the internet to kick off my “Week of Sharing” where I’m giving away all of my music for FREE.  From guest performers to tutorials on how to build an artist website and more, it was a great broadcast.

Above is the session I did with my Producer, Paul Shearer, talking about how we put together “Learning How To Live” and playing some new tunes acoustically.  Skip to about 20 min in to hear the songs, or just check out the full chat.

More highlights from Monday to come soon [as soon as I edit through 14 hours!!!]

“Simple Things” by Michael Shoup and Danny Young
Song-A-Week. Submit Ideas! http://blog.michaelshoup.com/submit

Welcome to the fourth episode of Song-A-Week!

This week’s song was based on a request by Gene Chaser for an upbeat, motivational song about living for the simple things in life for the future.

When I think about going back to basics and simple joys, I think about the first instrument I ever played: Piano. So this week I stretched the ole piano muscles, and along with Danny Young co-writing and playing the drums, I think it came out great!

Lyrics, FREE DOWNLOAD and Tech details below!

———————————————-

SIMPLE THINGS

Every day the same alarm
But still it doesn’t wake me
A dead end job, so what’s the harm
Gotta find something to shake me around

Never thought it’d be this hard
When I was a child
I miss those things I disregard
Haven’t been there for a while

CHORUS:
Like riding your bike down your childhood street
And eating the things that you’re not supposed to eat
Whatever you do that makes you feel complete
It’s just the simple things

Change my clothes, change my name
Change my location
But everything just felt the same
It’s a life of simulation

Everyone’s just running blind
If only we would listen
Take a breath and just unwind
Find those pieces that we’re missing

CHORUS x2

“Bigger, Better, Soon” by Michael Shoup
SONG-A-WEEK, April 12 2001

Submit Ideas! http://blog.michaelshoup.com/submit

Welcome to the third episode of Song-A-Week! This week’s song was inspired by a quote sent in by Molly Goodwin:

“Sometimes your only mode of transportation is a leap of faith.” - Margaret Shepard

I had been wanting to write an up-tempo Summer driving song for a while, and this idea totally inspired me to accept the challenge!  The video was shot on the return trip from visiting family back in Ohio, and the whole thing was written, shot, and edited in 48 hours.  Lyrics, Tech details, and a FREE DOWNLOAD of the song below!

——————————————-

BIGGER, BETTER, SOON

I can feel the wheels rolling
On 65
I’ve been waiting for the summer
Just to feel alive

Got no gas in my tank
But I’m not afraid
‘Cause the only way I move
Is by a leap of faith

Drive, until the sky turns blue
Oh try, just gotta make a move
Oh I’m alive, so what have I got to lose but
Bigger, Better, Soon

Got my head lights bright
Cause’ the road’s not clear
I leave the sun of yesterday
In my rear view mirror

And try as I might
To pick up the pace
The only way I move
Is by a leap of faith

CHORUS

Speak up world, I wanna listen
Tell me all that I’ve been missing

SOLO

CHORUS
