Who controls/updates your Tumblr? Is it you or your agent/manager?

itbeginsatmidnight

Yep, it's me.It is the one and only, Me!

There are some things I don’t EVER think one should outsource… and number one on my list is talking to real people.

You guys are what it’s all about to me, and I’ll never put a barrier between what I put out there and what you want to say back.

You can rest assured that when it says it’s me, I will Always be the one moderating, listening, and posting on this blog. My lovely assistant, Kristen [who is also featured singing in this video], may post from time to time but always as herself.  You can follow her adventures as well here: http://kristenwright.tumblr.com/

Thanks for asking!

Song For You // Tell me Your story, I’ll write you a Song
http://michaelshoup.com/songforyou

“Closer” is the first song in my 2012 “Song For You” series. Inspired by Maddy Rushing’s story of two kismet lover’s meeting, it explores what transpires in the moment a spark ignites between these lovers.

Enormous thank you’s to all the incredibly creative folks that helped in the making of this and to Maddy for such a great idea.  Submit your own story at the link above.

In 2011, I wrote one song a week for three months about anything my fans could dream up, and gave them all away for FREE.

I’m back at it again, and making it bigger than ever.  Once a month, I will pick an idea / story / piece of inspiration that was submitted here and write, record, and shoot a music video for a completely new song!

From filmmaker and fan collaborations to contests and deeper interaction, this year’s songwriting campaign is gonna be one for the record books!  At the end of it, you’ll walk away with 5 new songs and music videos, downloadable for FREE.

…and it all starts with You.  So go ahead… tell me your Story.

Thankful

I sorta always knew it’d be music for me.  Nothing else quite seemed to fit.  I always considered myself one of the lucky ones. I knew.  And though knowing didn’t always make things easy, it could’ve been a lot harder… without You.

You were always there when it was time for cheering.  You cared to listen when the clouds seemed low.

We have laughed and lived and made such amazing music together.  And we’ll do it again, day after day.

For you, I am so very Thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving,
~ michael

everyartistwasfirstanamateur asked you: Do you have any advice for me on how to get signed?

———————————————————————————————————-

Honestly? My advice would be don’t.

My question for you is, what does it mean to you to get “signed”? And what are you expecting out of it?  I can tell you from working at a label and with labels before, it’s probably not gonna be what you were expecting…

i've read articles online about the main problem with the internet being the vast amounts of people on it doing the same thing you're doing, so basically what you're saying you have a method, or you are a theorist on the methods on getting past this "white noise" on the internet? and you seriously hire people from the phillipines to market you online? whoa lol a little elaboration please, this sounds interesting... if you don't mind that is

senyorj

I don’t mind at all.  Let me see if I can help elaborate.
[for reference, this is a follow up post in response to my answer of being an “Entropic Strategist” here]

Entropic Strategies for Music Marketing : navigating the noise

en·tro·py :A measure of the disorder or randomness in a closed system.

stra·te·gist : One who is skilled in planning actions or policies designed to achieve a major goal or overall aim.

While Entropic Strategist may merely be my own word to describe the style of scatter-storm marketing I use for myself and other artists, it’s a style that was proven in the business and startup world many times over long before the Wild West of the Music Industry we have today.

I’ve always prided myself on being independent; on never asking for help on something before first trying as hard as I possibly could on my own.  I’ve taken that attitude with me into everything from entrepreneurial ventures to learning instruments and even my personal life.  But even for a seasoned agent of independence, there are moments in life that you find yourself stretched to the limit, burning up as you race yourself to the finish.  You might as well be walking on the face of the sun.

Leave The GroundThe last six months of my life have been some of the most emotionally reviving and physically exhausting that I can recall… but the lessons have been paramount.  Together, you and I knocked out 9 new songs and music videos in under 3 months.  We cracked up together every Friday with Danny Young and I making fools of ourselves singing anything from Katy Perry to random Disney Songs.  And we’ve covered a lot of information, from personal real life issues, to the changing music industry.  While I’m excited to say that this does not mark the end of these events at all, it does mean they may slow down for a while as I refocus my energies.  Why?

Michael’s going out on tour.

Starting in September, I’m looking to book every other weekend out of town.  It’s a small start towards the bigger picture of me being on the road full-time, and it’s already been an exciting ride preparing for it.  With the help of 2 lovely new team members (say hello to Roxanne and Ryan, everyone!) and the strategy of 12South Music behind us, the Shoup bus is about to be on it’s way to a city near you.  And I can’t wait.

Does this mean Song-A-Week is over?

Absolutely not.  Though, it should probably be renamed to “Song-A-Week-or-so” as I may not be churning them out every 7 days.  However, Paul Shearer and I already have a new tune finished and ready to be video-ized for you all!  It’s called “Closer” and I’m really excited for you to hear/see/taste/smell it.

Where will you be playing?

Midwest TourSo glad you asked :).  Initially, I’m booking up around TN, KY, OH, IN, and IL although if you live outside of those areas and feel like I should really come play your town, please get ahold of me via the Contact page and let me know where.  You can also use the nifty little Demand It widget I’ve got on my Shows page.  There are already a number of shows booked for the first week of September through that area, so be sure to check them out.  If you’re in Cleveland or Dayton, Ohio, watch out, because I’m about to crash your city.

Also, if you’d like to see song tuneage in a more intimate setting, think about perhaps hosting a House Show.  I’ll be trying a few of these along the way with club shows, and they can really be a lot of fun.  Check here for more info.

Lastly:

Week of SharingIf you missed the craziness that happened a few weeks back, I gave away 2 complete records of my music for FREE for one week, and did a live broadcast of 24hrs of my life, complete with tutorials, live performances, and utter ridiculousness.

For this weekend only, I’m opening that FREE DOWNLOAD back up.  Click HERE and you can access both of the records for free along with some nifty highlights from the live broadcast.  I’m sure I’ll make a “best of” reel here sometime in the future… after I edit through the 14hrs of footage I have.

Thank you all for always being so supportive and communicative with me, and I look forward to what this next stage has in store for us all!

The art of progress is to preserve order amid change and to preserve change amid order.

Alfred North Whitehead
English Mathematician and Philosopher

Paul Shearer and Michael Shoup talk about making the record, and play a previously unreleased song!

For those of you who missed out on Monday, I decided to broadcast 14hrs of my life LIVE on the internet to kick off my “Week of Sharing” where I’m giving away all of my music for FREE.  From guest performers to tutorials on how to build an artist website and more, it was a great broadcast.

Above is the session I did with my Producer, Paul Shearer, talking about how we put together “Learning How To Live” and playing some new tunes acoustically.  Skip to about 20 min in to hear the songs, or just check out the full chat.

More highlights from Monday to come soon [as soon as I edit through 14 hours!!!]

You Sing, I Write Interview

I met up with Annie from “You Sing, I Write” not too long ago to talk music and everything under the sun.  She was nice enough to hold the interview until now to help promote my week of sharing! It’s a great article, so thanks so much Annie!  Read away, and if you haven’t yet, make sure to get your FREE DOWNLOAD this week.
